Cup of Excellence 2011

By Paul Massard, Bean Hunter

We’re pleased to announce that we have added two new offerings from the Cup of Excellence program to our Reserve selection. Before I go any further, though, I would like to explain the Cup of Excellence program for those of you who might be unfamiliar with it.

The Cup of Excellence website describes it best:

“The Cup of Excellence is the most esteemed award given out for top coffees. These awards come from a strict competition that selects the very best coffee produced in that country for that particular year. These winning coffees are chosen by a select group of national and international cuppers and are cupped at least five different times during the competition process. Only coffees that continuously score high enough are allowed to move forward in the competition. The final winners are awarded the prestigious Cup of Excellence® and sold to the highest bidder during an internet auction.”

The most important part of this auction is not that The Roasterie and other roasters get amazing coffees. It’s that the farmers are recognized for their hard work. This recognition increases their quality of life tremendously: not only is their compensation for their coffee increased– as some of the top lots will go for $40-$50/lb– but these farmers also instantly become rock stars in the coffee world. This program also exposes them and their farms to hundreds if not thousands of coffee buyers, who will seek to source coffee from these farms in the future, again increasing their quality of life.

And now, without further ado, announcing our two new Limited Edition, Once-They’re-Gone-They’re-Gone-Forever Reserve coffees:
