This coffee is produced on family owned farms organized around the cooperative UtamaGro Tani Gayo, located in the Takengon highlands of the Aceh province on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Of the 1,175 members to the cooperative, a high percentage of these coffee farmers, typically from the most remote villages of the Takengon highlands, are widows who have lost their husbands during periods of conflict in Aceh. Natural disasters also present frequent challenges for maintaining infrastructure in this otherwise naturally beautiful and mineral rich micro-region surrounding Lake Tawa. Despite these challenges, UtamaGroTani Gayo has worked tirelessly to establish a cooperative which is focused on quality coffee production through education on best organic agricultural practices and environmental stewardship. Through the co-op, many of the women coffee producers have increased quality and yields over time, thus increasing prices and improving living conditions and financial flexibility of the producers throughout the area.
