DIY Coffee: How to Make the Best Homemade Latte

It’s Saturday morning. You’ve just woken up to the sound of rain splattering against your window. You peer outside and see it’s still a bit gray out—clouds cover the blue sky and you can almost feel the chill of the wind through the window. You have nowhere to be and your bed starts to feel just that much more comfortable. And at that moment, you decide to stay in bed all morning.  Let’s face it: there are days when you just don’t want to leave the house. Nothing sounds better than snuggling up with your favorite book, a great movie, or even your dog or cat. Sometimes, you feel so lazy and comfortable that you don’t even want to get out of the house to grab a cup of coffee. It’s not that you don’t want a delicious latte from your one of your favorite coffee shops—it’s just that leaving your home isn’t on your morning to-do list. So that leaves you wondering how to make a latte at home.  Lucky for you, we have the perfect recipe for the best homemade latte—perfect for those chilly, rainy days where you just can’t seem to get out of the house (let alone off of the couch!) This homemade latte recipe is easy to make with ingredients and tools you already have at home.  Whether you’re a seasoned barista or a coffee novice, we promise this simple recipe will quickly become a staple in your weekend routine. All you need is coffee and milk (yes it’s really that simple!) and a few extra moments to make a latte at home.

The Roasterie Homemade Latte Recipe

Tools: Coffee pot, saucepan, milk frother or whisk, and mug Ingredients: There are two main ingredients needed for your latte: coffee and milk (yep that’s it!) You have a few options when it comes to which type of milk and coffee to use. Depending on what you want your latte to taste like.

  • Coffee: Traditional lattes use espresso for caffeine and the coffee flavor. But if you don’t have an espresso maker, you can also use a strongly brewed coffee for the same effect. We recommend the Super Tuscan or 40 Sardines for a rich, smooth taste.
  • Milk: You can use whatever kind of milk you prefer! If you are looking for a rich, creamy latte, use 2% milk. If you’re looking for skinny coffee, give skim or 1% a try. You can always try something new like almond milk, rice milk, or soy milk for a dairy-free alternative as well.
Directions:
  1. Brew up a cup of your favorite coffee,
  2. As the coffee is brewing, heat 1 to 1½ cups of milk in a saucepan.
  3. Froth your milk. If you don’t have a milk frother, you can do this easily with a whisk! To do this, vigorously whisk the heating milk into a froth (WARNING: you will get a bit of an arm workout!)
  4. Pour the coffee into your favorite mug, leaving a bit of room at the top for your frothy milk.
  5. Pour the milk over the coffee, holding some froth back with a spoon for a topping.
  6. Once you have only froth left, finish up the pour by layering the froth on the tippy top of the beverage. You can use as little or as much froth as you prefer. More froth will make it more like a cappuccino, whereas less froth will keep it as a traditional latte.
  7. If you like it sweet, add some sugar, vanilla extract, a dusting of cinnamon or honey.
  8. Enjoy your homemade latte!
This recipe also allows you to test your barista skills and creativity! You can add a wide variety of optional toppings to this recipe to add more flavor and personality to your beverage. Some of our favorites include cinnamon, honey, sugar, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, nutmeg, brown sugar, and hazelnut extract! And if you happen to have flavored syrups at home, you can also try your hand at making flavored lattes as well. Just mix these into the warm milk and coffee mixture before you top it with the remaining foam.  Now it’s time to snuggle up on the couch, throw a blanket over yourself and enjoy your rainy, chilly day at home—and it all starts with a DIY latte.  You deserve it, right?
