As many of our customers know, The Roasterie is so much more than a roaster of the world’s best coffee. We are a member of the Kansas City community and we pride ourselves on our commitment to customer service and a passion for excellence. That’s why we make sure to hire those who share a love not just for coffee but also for the surrounding community.

An excellent example of this can be found in Mike Valent, the Director of Operations for The Roasterie Cafés. We sat down with Mike to learn more about him and what led him here to The Roasterie.

Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Mike graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Finance. As someone who loves to travel, Mike has lived in Hawaii, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio. He once spent four days on a 37ft sailboat with three friends sailing from Catania, Italy to the island of Crete. It was his first time on a sailboat and thankfully the rest of the crew was far more experienced than he was.

For most of his life, Mike has worked in the hospitality industry (however, there was one year – the longest year of his life – when he tried his hand at banking). Mike has extensive experience in full service restaurants. His hobbies include being a great dad and an even better husband. He enjoys playing golf, disc golf, hiking, long walks on the beach (a little cliché, Mike), cooking, and smoking meat – he hopes to one day compete in a BBQ tournament. He is a self-proclaimed kickball legend and invites you all to Google him.

What was most appealing to you about joining The Roasterie family?

The most appealing thing about joining The Roasterie family was that they were a local company with an outstanding product. I want to work for a company that has a great product, strong community presence, and amazing people! I feel The Roasterie is all encompassing in that regard.

Customer service is important to The Roasterie, how do you plan on keeping or improving upon customer service at the Cafés?

We have a remarkable staff of baristas. I teach them to take ownership and responsibility with every task as well as always considering the guest first in every decision they make, remembering, that the guests’ perception is their reality.

What are some exciting things you have planned for The Roasterie Cafés?

We are excited to announce that The Roasterie Café in Brookside will be undergoing a remodel. We always like to have positive change for the company as well as the community as a whole. Please pardon the dust!

Do you have a favorite Roasterie coffee?

My favorite Roasterie coffee is any single origin coffee. I like that every coffee needs to be roasted to varying degrees to bring out its unique characteristics and different flavors. The Roasterie’s single origin coffees are true examples of a quality product.

Stop by your favorite Roasterie Café and if you’re lucky you might be able to catch Mike in action!
