Your Coffee FAQ Answered

While the most frequently asked question we receive here at The Roasterie is in reference to what kind of coffee we would recommend, occasionally we receive questions of a more educational nature. We asked our Roasterie experts what their most frequently asked questions were and this is what we found out.

Below are the answers to a few coffee-related questions that you’ve probably been wondering about:

1. Is coffee dehydrating?

Drinking caffeinated beverages does not cause fluid loss. Coffee can actually be just as hydrating as water. The diuretic effect of caffeine is not strong enough to counter-balance the benefits of fluid intake from drinking coffee.

2. Does coffee improve levels of concentration?

When you drink coffee, brain activity that controls memory and concentration is temporarily boosted. This can cause an increase in energy and alertness. What a great way to stay awake and focused at work!

3. Is drinking coffee good for your health?

A coffee a day can keep the doctor away! Coffee is full of antioxidants that helps cleanse toxins from our bodies especially those that cause disease. Fun Fact: People who drink four or more cups of coffee daily have a 50 percent lower risk of Type 2 diabetes.

4. What effect does coffee have on our athletic ability?

Studies have shown that caffeine enhances endurance performance by increasing the release of adrenaline into the blood. Therefore, stimulating the release of fatty acids from fat tissue and muscle. It is safe to say the Sporting Blend can strengthen your athletic abilities!

5. How does coffee keep us awake?

Caffeine! It is a stimulant that boosts mental performance positively enough for studying, working, or completing complex tasks. Just remember serotonin is drained throughout the caffeine experience, eventually making for the coffee high to wear away. This is where that third or fourth cup comes in handy!

6. Do dark roasts contain more caffeine than lighter roasts?

Dark roast coffee actually contains lower levels of caffeine. Light and dark roasts come from the same bean, but the temperature and the time they are roasted are very different. If you are looking for an extra caffeine fix, brew up a cup of light roast coffee!

6. When is the best time to drink coffee?

If you find yourself needing more than your normal amount of caffeine, try drinking your coffee between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. This way the caffeine won’t be suppressed from your body’s natural caffeinated jolt.

7. Is coffee bad for your heart?

Studies have shown that 2 cups of coffee per day can actually help reduce the risk of heart disease. Drinking the equivalent of two cups of coffee per day appears to have the most significant benefit on heart health, when compared to no coffee consumption. The American Heart Association recommends that heart failure patients consume no more than a cup or two of coffee a day.

8. Does coffee stunt your growth?

How this myth got started is unknown. Bottom line, caffeine has no known side effects on the growth or development of anyone at any age. Just take a look at our founder Danny O’Neill, he’s about 6’8 and drinks several cups of coffee a day.

9. Can caffeine cure hangovers?

An innocent night out with friends can turn into a morning of absolute sickness. A study done by Thomas Jefferson University’s Michael Oshinksky, found that a cup of coffee paired with aspirin may be the best hangover cure. It is a perfect pick me up for the morning after!

10. Is your coffee strong at The Roasterie?

This is a hard question to answer because some customers may be talking about the roast value. Here at The Roasterie we brew our coffee to be strong. Other customers may ask this because they want to know how much caffeine is in the coffee. This is when our baristas tell them they can water down the coffee so it is not as strong.

11. What does organic mean?

Organic coffee is grown using methods that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and builds healthy agriculture. Many organic farmers try to abide by all of the laws to produce the best possible organic products.
